The Museum of Archeology in Naples

Must get the last of my Italy posts done. Last day I trekked to Naples. I had been told to check out the Museum of Archeology as thats where the Pompeian mosaics were. It was also packed with some of the most magnificent statues I have ever seen.

Turns out I have a bit of a thing for statues! Who would have thought it? I suppose none of the other places I have visited were big on statues, but Rome is crammed with them.

In this museum there are statues of most of the caesers. Amazing.

1. Giaus Julius Caeser! The man himself

2 & 3. Emperor Commodus - The young Emperor from the movie Gladiator, played by Joaquin Pheonix

4. Emperor Marcus Aurolius - The old emperor from Gladiator, played by Richard Harris

5. Claudius Caeser

6. Brutus - as in Et tu Brute?

I am not a big fan of Roman statues but I love the one when the man is kneeling and holding a ball on his back. Is this Atlas and Earth? Atlas led the Titan's in a battle. As a result he was punished by Zeus and made to hold up the world on his back.

But Zeus was a greek god...so I don't know.

It is Atlas holding the Earth on his shoulders. The detail on them is just stunning. Especially as they were carved 2000 years ago.
