We are all made of stars

Discovery by Stardust probe in Wild 2 comet suggests life on Earth began in space.

A fundamental building block of biology has been discovered in wisps of stardust from the tail of a comet, offering fresh evidence that life on Earth could have begun from matter that arrived on our planet from space.

New analysis of tiny particles captured by the Stardust comet-chasing probe has revealed for the first time the presence of traces of an amino acid called glycine, a basic component of proteins without which life as we know it could not exist.

The discovery, by Nasa scientists, supports a theory that the raw material from which life began first formed in space, and was carried to Earth by comets that crashed into the planet. It also means that other planets are likely to have been seeded with amino acids from comets in a similar fashion, suggesting that extraterrestrial life may well have evolved elsewhere in the Universe and could even be common.

“Glycine is an amino acid used by living organisms to make proteins, and this is the first time an amino acid has been found in a comet,” said Jamie Elsila, of Nasa’s Goddard Space Flight Centre in Maryland, who led the research. “Our discovery supports the theory that some of life’s ingredients formed in space and were delivered to Earth long ago by meteorite and comet impacts.”

Carl Pilcher, director of the Nasa Astrobiology Institute, said: “The discovery of glycine in a comet supports the idea that the fundamental building blocks of life are prevalent in space, and strengthens the argument that life in the Universe may be common rather than rare.”

The discovery is the latest to come from Nasa’s unmanned Stardust mission, which flew through the cloud of dust and debris trailing the Wild 2 comet on January 2, 2004.

Millions of tiny particles from the comet’s tail were captured by a grid filled with aerogel, a super-light, sponge-like material sometimes nicknamed “frozen smoke” because 99 per cent of its volume is empty space.

A capsule containing the collection grid detached from the spacecraft soon after its close encounter with Wild 2 and returned to Earth, where it parachuted to the surface on January 15, 2006. Scientists have since been examining the contents of the capsule for clues about the early solar system.

All forms of life on Earth rely on proteins, which drive chemical reactions in their cells and form many of the structural elements around which organisms are built. This huge variety of proteins are all made up of chains of 20 amino acids.

The origin of amino acids has long been debated among scientists, with some favouring the view that they emerged in the primordial soup of the planet’s youth, and others proposing that they formed in space and came here on comets and meteorites.

The discovery of glycine in the Stardust samples points towards an extraterrestrial origin for at least one of the 20 amino acids.

Dr Elsila’s team first identified traces of glycine last year, in particles removed both from the aerogel and aluminium foil around it. As glycine is also present on Earth, however, the scientists had to confirm that it originated from space. The team used isotopic analysis to examine the chemical composition of the glycine. Many elements occur in different isotopes, or versions, which have different masses.

“We discovered that the Stardust-returned glycine has an extraterrestrial carbon isotope signature, indicating that it originated on the comet,” Dr Elsisa said.

The Stardust probe will fly past the comet Tempel 1 in 2011.

The Kepler telescope "We won't find E.T., but we might find E.T.'s home"


NASA launched its Kepler spacecraft just before 11 p.m. Friday in a mission that the agency says may fundamentally change humanity's view of itself.

The Kepler spacecraft blasted into space on top of a Delta II rocket from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station in Florida.

The telescope will search our corner of the Milky Way galaxy for Earth-like planets.

"This is a historical mission. It's not just a science mission," NASA Associate Administrator Ed Weiler said during a prelaunch news conference.

"It really attacks some very basic human questions that have been part of our genetic code since that first man or woman looked up in the sky and asked the question: Are we alone?"

Kepler contains a special telescope that will stare at 100,000 stars in the Cygnus-Lyra region of the Milky Way for more than three years as it trails Earth's orbit around the Sun.

The spacecraft will look for tiny dips in a star's brightness, which can mean an orbiting planet is passing in front of it -- an event called a transit.

The instrument is so precise that it can register changes in brightness of 20 parts per million in stars that are thousands of light years away.

"Being able to make that kind of a sensitive measurement over a very large number of stars was extremely challenging," Kepler project manager James Fanson said.

"So we're very proud of the vehicle we have built. This is a crowning achievement for NASA and a monumental step in our search for other worlds around other stars."

"We won't find E.T., but we might find E.T.'s home," said William Borucki, science principal investigator for the Kepler mission.

Want to be an astronaut?

ESA (European Space Agency) is recruiting for new astronauts!! http://www.esa.int/esaHS/ESA1RMGBCLC_astronauts_0.html And I want to apply!! But do I have what it takes? Hmmmm?

A high level of education in scientific or technical disciplines, coupled with an outstanding professional background in research, application or education fields possibly supported by the use of computer systems and applications, is essential. Previous experience with aircraft operations is a bonus, particularly if it involved responsible tasks such as being a test pilot or flight engineer. The more skills and experience an applicant has the better, as this will increase their ability to undertake a variety of tasks.

Equally essential is excellent physical condition. Astronauts have to undergo intensive periods of training and may participate in spaceflights that last for months. During this time their body will be subject to a great deal of stress and good health and physical endurance are essential.


I guess thats a NO then. Looks like I'm waiting for commercial space flight to become cheap as chips. :(

Engerineered


Sometimes its not just the fantastic images from space and science that amaze. Sometimes it's the devices man has build to see and explore that amaze also. Click to enlarge.

1.Why do objects have mass? To help find out, Europe's CERN has built the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), the most powerful particle accelerator yet created by humans. Pictured above, a person stands in front of the huge ATLAS detector, one of six detectors being attached to the LHC.

3. The imposing structure in the foreground houses the Large Binocular Telescope (LBT), on Mount Graham, Arizona. While not exactly portable, the benefits of the large scale binocular configuration adopted include an increase in sensitivity over a single mirror telescope and high resolution imaging for faint objects over a relatively wide field of view.

4. The International Space Station (ISS) has been equipped with a powerful new scientific laboratory. The Space Shuttle Atlantis delivered the Columbus Laboratory to the ISS and installed the seven meter long module over the past week. Columbus has ten racks for experiments that can be controlled from the station or the Columbus Control Center in Germany. The first set of experiments includes the Fluid Science Laboratory that will explore fluid properties in the microgravity of low Earth orbit, and Biolab which supports experiments on microorganisms. Future Columbus experiments include an atomic clock that will test minuscule timing effects including those expected by Einstein's General Theory of Relativity.

The ultimate freedom



This is US astronaut Bruce McCandless II ( could he be anything other than American with that name!). This was taken in 1984 from Challenger. The very next mission the shuttle blew up on take off due to a faulty O Ring in the booster rockets.

Bruce is doing a spacewalk un-tethered - the furthest un-tethered spacewalk ever. He is manouvering using a jetpack on his back; the Manned Manouvering Unit (MMU) by firing little jets of Nitrogen in various directions.



The MMU was replaced by SAFER (Simplified Aid for EVA(Extra Vehicular Activety) Rescue). Modelled by the lovely Mark Lee - SAFER is smalled and, well safer, than the MMU.

Mark is wearing 1994 seasons white space suit, and is hanging 200km over the planet Earth.

Space. Not the final frontier.





A few of my all-time favourite astonomy pictures, including my all-time favourite moon, Europa. What do you mean you dont have a favourite moon? You cant be happy with our own boring moon? lol. It just sits up there doing nothing but regulating our tides. BORING. Now Europa is covered with ice...which means under the ice there will be water (there WILL be geothermal springs under there. If you see what state Io and Ganymede are in as a result of Jupiters gravity and intense radiation you will be in no doubt)...and if you get water, and volcanic chemicals.....HEY PRESTO, you get life :). Why a Europa trip isnt on the top of everyones list of things to do, I dont understand.

Soon (ish) we will send men to Mars, should be in the next 10 years. Its the one good thing Bush as done, although he was only trying to emulate JFK. He aint half that Prez.

But the big thing on my horizon is the Planetary Finder. WHich is a series of telescopes linked by laser or something else. It would be apparently stong enough see actual planets orbitting distant stars. Now that would be cool!! http://www.jpl.nasa.gov/missions/proposed/tpf.html

And notice I havent used the word Alien even once, lol.
